Bingson, Carter lead Team USA field events in Moscow

8/6/2013

After setting American records in their respective events at the USA Outdoor Championships in June in Des Moines, Iowa, Amanda Bingson (San Marcos, Texas, hammer throw) and Michelle Carter (Dallas, Texas, shot put) will look to carry that momentum and lead a strong group of Team USA athletes in the field events into the IAAF World Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which begin Saturday in Moscow, Russia.

The 14th edition of the IAAF World Outdoor Championships, competition runs from August 10-18. Team USA led all countries in both total medals won (25) and total gold medals won (12) during the 2011 World Outdoor Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

Joining Bingson and Carter are a long list of Americans in field events looking to defend their Olympic gold medals and world titles. Jesse Williams (Eugene, Ore.) will look to defend his 2011 world title in the men’s high jump while Dwight Phillips (Smyrna, Ga.) will attempt to win his fifth career world championship in the men’s long jump.

Brittney Reese (Gulfport, Miss.) and Christian Taylor (Fayetteville, Ga.) are both defending world champions and Olympic champions in the women’s long jump and men’s triple jump, respectively. Additionally, Jenn Suhr (Churchville, N.Y.), who won Olympic gold in the women’s pole vault in London and recently set the world indoor record, will look to win her first World Outdoor Championships medal, and Ryan Whiting (Port Matilda, Pa.), who hopes to build on a career that includes a World Indoor title in the men’s shot put, will add depth to Team USA in the field events.

Bingson twice set the American record in the women’s hammer throw final in Des Moines. Setting a personal best by close to three meters, Bingson’s American record now stands at 75.73m/248-5. Carter, who was confident the American record would fall for her during the 2013 season, bettered a mark shared by Ramona Pagel and Jillian Camarena-Williams with a throw of 20.24m/66-5.

Reese enters the World Outdoor Championships having not lost an Olympic, World Indoor  Championships or World Outdoor Championships final since 2008. The American indoor record holder in the event, Reese’s career includes Olympic gold in 2012, World Indoor gold in ‘10 and ‘12 and World Outdoor gold in ‘09 and ‘11.

Whiting is in the midst of a strong season in 2013 that has included three wins during this year’s Diamond League season. He also holds the top four throws in the world this season.

Williams looks to regain his 2011 form that witnessed him win the World Outdoor Championships and the Jesse Owens Athlete of the Year Award from USATF while Phillips hopes to add another world title to the ones he won in ‘03, ‘05, ‘09 and ‘11.
